 2017 Preview 


       Mars Hill finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Mars Hill just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 2A region eight with a 0-6 region record.

       The 232 points scored by the Panthers last year were a team record in a single season. The Panthers have never qualified for a playoff spot and would love to break that streak this season. The Panthers have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2017.

       The Panthers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-18 record.

       Mars Hill is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only three seasons. They have managed a record of 3-27 over the past three years.

       The Panthers are led by head coach Darrell Higgins who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 0-10 record in his first season at Mars Hill. The Panthers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Higgins.

       The Panthers won a school record six games last year on the football field only to vacate the wins during the off season for using an ineligible player.

       The Mars Hill Panthers will play in Class 2A region eight during the 2017 season.

       With a little luck and some improvement, the Panthers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region eight this season. Mars Hill has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 0 but hope to return to the post season this year.

       The Panthers open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Vina on Friday, August 25. Last year the Vina Red Devils finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 1A region eight.

       Mars Hill and Vina have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 3-1-0 record against the Red Devils. They last met in 2016 with Vina winning by a score of 6-22.

The Hazlewood Golden Bears have won 11 state titles. The most of any team in any classification since the playoffs began in 1966.
